Letter from the President

Spring 2018

Weston Soccer Families,

Team assignments for the Spring 2018 season are out, and I hope you’re all dreaming about playing soccer (outdoors!!).  The Weston Soccer Club Board has had a busy winter and I’m writing to tell you about some of the changes you’ll see in the program this spring.

As always, we have made them with the quality of your experience in mind, after internal dialogue and personal conversations with many friends whose children play in the program.  We want to hear your thoughts and invite your comment by writing to me, John Power (President, WSC) at jpower11@me.com.

Two Team Sessions Per Week

The most obvious change you’ll notice right away is that teams will now practice twice per week and there will be no grade-wide skills clinics.  Your coaches will be in touch as soon as possible to let you know your practice schedule.

Our professional Director of Coaching, Lee Moyce, will work closely with coaches to ensure that we maintain a focus on developing technical skills, but the second team practice will give us the ability to teach the team aspects of the game more fully.  Your players will also enjoy the benefits of developing deeper bonds with teammates through the extra team experiences this season.

We’ve been working with coaches during the winter to prepare them for the need to staff 2 sessions per week – while it is the way the program always ran until approximately 8 years ago, it will represent an increased workload to your volunteer coaches.  Please let your coach know if you can help supervise or run a session if your team needs you.

Why Change?

We introduced skills sessions to increase the emphasis on technical development and to give all players in each grade a chance to play together regardless of their team assignments.

The benefits of those initiatives have been gradually eroded, however, by declining attendance at the skills clinics.  We suspect that attendance is a function of at least a few factors, including the challenge of finding professional coaches who can make the sessions sufficiently interesting, the rise in popularity of club soccer, and a general preference for playing with one’s team rather than in a group of many teams.

There was another factor for us to consider as well...

The WSC Budget

Declining class sizes have begun to reduce WSC’s revenue, while the costs of maintaining our fields is rising.  We raised fees last year and take our responsibility to use your fees wisely very seriously.  We need to get value for the money we spend.Professionally staffed clinics with poor attendance did not meet that standard of value.

Evaluations

You’ll see another change in the program this spring that we believe will save money and improve our team assignment process for our players – we are replacing season-end evaluations, or tryouts, with Mini-Tournaments at the halfway point and end of the season.  Our Director of Coaching, Lee Moyce, will run them and will personally supervise the player evaluation process.

We believe that the tournaments will be more fun for our players, that having 2 observations over the course of the season will give us a better picture of a player’s abilities and improvement, that Lee Moyce’s professional quality will give us an even better, more involved professional opinion on each of our players – all while maintaining a fair and transparent player evaluation and placement process and money for the Club

On behalf of the entire WSC Board I wish you all a fun and healthy spring season.  Let us know what you like and don’t like about the program, we’re here to serve!!

Cheers,

JP
